Meet the Team is a recurring series on the PowerReviews blog, allowing you to get to know the people behind our success.
This week, we sat down with Nadine Nack, a software engineer on our Technology team, to talk about what projects her team is tackling right now, why she loves working at PowerReviews (she just celebrated her 1 year anniversary with us), and what she’s up to after hours.
What are your responsibilities as a software engineer?
I work on a small team that is rewriting the system responsible for processing and delivering all the review content we collect for our clients. It started out as a pretty daunting task, but I’ve ended up learning so much in the process. The majority of my days are spent writing code, but I also spend time in daily standups, writing documentation, participating in sprint planning meetings, and collaborating with other engineers.
What brought you to PowerReviews?
I was working at my last job with Andy Hass, our Senior Front End Engineer, and he left for PowerReviews. A month or two later I heard from a recruiter that they were looking for software engineers. I interviewed with the company, loved what they were doing, and made the switch. I’ve loved it ever since!
What is your favorite part of working for PowerReviews?
There are so many. Everyone I work with is so smart and so kind. They’re funny, too. I’ve grown and learned and I know my team and our senior leadership team really believe in me. It says something about a company when the impact of everyone’s work is acknowledged and appreciated openly by Matt Moog, our CEO, and Dev Mukherjee, our President and Chief Operating Officer.
What is your favorite snack in the office kitchen?
When I was working in our San Francisco office a few weeks ago, I found seaweed snacks, which I had never seen in our kitchen before. Seaweed is my favorite, and I didn’t think I’d be able to leave San Francisco after making this discovery. Upon my return, however, my teammate, Austen, informed me that there is seaweed in the Chicago office, too. I haven’t found it yet, though. I also got a SodaStream machine for Christmas so I stop drinking all the LaCroix in the office.
What can you be found doing outside of the office?
I enjoy endurance sports, particularly running and biking. I read all the time, too. Margaret Atwood is my favorite author ever. I’d read any of her books over and over again. I just picked up a book called Men Explain Things to Me, which seems like a short but fun read. I also do a lot of cooking. I don’t really have a specialty, but I do love breakfast so much.
I’m also about to start volunteering with Girls Who Code at Lane Tech College Preparatory. It’s such a cool school– they have a hydroponics lab! I’ll be going in every Wednesday starting this month. More than 20 girls are signed up so far, and I’m excited to teach them how to code. I’m hopeful it’ll move us closer toward closing the gender gap.
